Towards a demystification of gear wear
For maintenance staff, knowledge about wear gear levels is often difficult to get by. This knowledge is often limited to a follow-up of vibration levels, which represent only the result of the problem rather than the origin.
The objective of our training plan is to develop their know-how in wear of rotative equipment :
- Demystifying the functioning of wear gear
- Understanding the link between profile deformation and vibration
- Controlling wear gear in order to increase the shelf life of machinery equipment
- Wear speed measured on site precise to 0.05 mm
- Classification of profile deformation (colour codes : green, yellow, red, black)
- Efficiently dealing with the demands of sleeve and thrust ball bearings
- Addressing the choice of lubricants as well as type of lubrication
- Learning what types of control should be carried out to identify the wear level
Acquiring a know-how to anticipate breakages and avoid production losses
Actually, this knowledge and these control measures will permit :
- A better catch up of information
- An anticipation of potential problems and therefore a better risk assessment of wear levels on the kinematics of rotative equipment
- Avoidance of tooth breakages (fissures)
- Avoidance of damages on bedplates or gearbox bearings
- Increased shelf life of harnesses
Developing a new form of easy and performing inspection.
This form permits a perfectly timed intervention as well as an anticipation of progressive wear levels within the framework of our predictive maintenance project.
Content and tools
Our gear mock-up enables the visualization of gear conditions and explains a part of the 12 key parameters.
Our software CADOR can simulate meshing on screen (access to gear teeth geometry and meshing geometry).

These templates allow measurement and calculation of the profile deformation and wear speed.

The main points discussed within our training program are :
- Theory of crown wear
- Calculations of wear speed to increase equipments’ shelf life
- Types of control to be carried out to evaluate wear levels
- Reduction of maintenance costs linked to a risk reduction
- How to avoid production losses due to stoppages (crowns, tires and bearings)
In order to facilitate the understanding process of the participants we use the following tools :
- A gear scale model simulating the meshing of gear
- Our software, used for to lining and calculating gear data
- Pinion and crown templates (laser-cut) to understand the measurement of wear characteristics
