Concerning the wear of rollers and tires, we can treat the following types of damages :

• Material discharge and flatness defects

Facetting

Generally, they are due to :

• A problem of meshing gear in the case of a pinon / crown harness
• Differences in diameter driven by friction
• Poor adjustment or poor alignment

Chipping

This phenomenon is entailed by high Hertz pressure. A poor load distribution, undersizing, flatness defects and steps often entail these types of damages.

Scratches

These types of damages are common and can occur for different reasons :

• Presence of graphite linked to an abrasive environment
• Out-of-true on rolling elements
• Insufficient hardness on rolling elements

Material discharges

Numerous situations can entail this type of deformation :

• Change of lubrication mode without changing adjustment measures
• Too much slipping effort linked to an excessive friction coefficient
• Lack of parallelism of rollers
• Insufficient hardness (creeping on the edges)

A hard roller or a tire is not subject to creeping. However, chipping risks remain high. This fact applies also to gear.
Thus, hardness measurements, conducted on every rotative element are essential.
